Villeneuve back to Middle East for new film
MONTREAL - Quebec director Denis Villeneuve, who shot to international acclaim with his Oscar-nominated film "Incendies," is revisiting the Middle East for his next project.
Villeneuve will adapt the graphic novel "Footnotes in Gaza," which recounts the massacre of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli army during the Suez Canal crisis of 1956.
Claude Girard, Villeneuve's agent, says the filmmaker was recruited by French film production house Tu vas voir.
Villeneuve is expected to work alongside an as yet unnamed American scriptwriter on the project.
"Footnotes in Gaza," which was published in 2009, is by noted author Joe Sacco, whose illustrated stories are part of the so-called cartoon journalism genre.
The book has won rave reviews since its publication.
''Incendies'' garnered Villeneuve an Oscar nomination last year for best foreign-language film.
The movie tells the story of twins who go to the Middle East to unravel the mystery of their mother's life.
