Wyclef To Run For President of Haiti

Lauryn Hill to appear lazier than ever.

Since it doesn't look like Lauryn Hill will be getting her sanity back anytime soon, Wyclef Jean has a window available to try something new. Race-car driving? It's been done. Creating a cologne? The Kardashians are taking up all the lab space. What about president of Haiti? That's open.

Wyclef, who was born in Croix-des-Bouquets and lived there until he was nine, told Time he would be announcing his candidacy to lead the Caribbean nation. CNN backed this up, reporting Wyclef would kick off his campaign on Larry King Live on Thursday. This gives Larry plenty of time to research what a "rapper" is.

No one else has announced their candidacy for the November 28 election, but Wyclef is no sure thing. He barely speaks the official languages, French and Creole, and the 37-year-old hasn't lived in Haiti for 28 years.

And, while, yes, Haitians do love him, and he's done a great job at inspiring kids through his charity Yéle Haiti, the group was also called out for shady accounting. Some taxes went unpaid while the foundation had six-figure contracts with production companies owned by Wyclef and his crew. He tells Time he now has a new accountant. "I took responsibility," he told the magazine. "I took the bullet."

As charismatic as Wyclef is, I'm going to need some more convincing before I can see this. He has a long history of working with different charities, and I'm sure everyone appreciated that he brought Brangelina to visit. And let's be real, the sitting Haitian president has no chance of getting on Larry King unless he discovers Anna Nicole Smith's secret gold. But some scepticism is good. I would feel the same way if Stephen Harper wanted to do a rap with Shakira: excited, but hesitant.
