Singer Katy Perry's ex-boyfriend Travie McCoy cried over their break-up and then sampled his sobbing for a track, he has revealed.

Travie, whose relationship with Perry ended 18 months ago, cries throughout Don't Pretend – one of the songs from his new album Lazarus.

The 28-year-old musician told UK newspaper the Daily Star: "That song is the most introspective and personal on the album.

"In a sense, I felt I'd had my heart ripped out – I'm crying throughout the song."

But McCoy revealed that recording the song helped him find closure.

He said: "The album is about coming out the other side of something really painful.

"Getting all those feelings down was therapeutic and now I feel like I've drawn a line under the relationship.”

He added: "There was a lot of stuff that did not make the album because it was too dark.

"But Don’t Pretend, along with a lot of those unused tracks, gave me closure."
